A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Photo Of The Month - April

April has finished, and another months worth of photos taken and uploaded. The best? You choose...vote using the poll on the left.

Day 194 - Snow White

Today is Childrens Day. A rather subdued one this year thanks to the Swine Flu.

Day 193 - Porkcard Day

I offered a random reader of my blog a porkcard postcard from Mexico City, to show there is still life here. That entailed a trip to the fabulous Postal Palace near Bellas Artes to get the said card stamped and dropped in a mail box.

Day 192 - Ruta Britanica

A microbus owned by an Anglophile.

Day 191 - Sin Agua

Protesters outside my home, angry that the government has spent two days telling them to wash their hands as often as possible to prevent further spread of swineflu, whilst also shutting off the water for two days. They were later removed forcibly by riot police.

Day 190 - Five Empty Rings

The grand Olympic stadium prepares for a game. Without a crowd. Thanks Mr Flu.

Day 189 - Bright Lights Giant City

A night time shot from the top of Torre Latinoamericana.

Day 188 - Not So Big Now

Bellas Artes taken from atop Torre Latinoamericana.

Day 187 - Chorlton

There are millions of these insects about at the moment. They are getting everywhere and in everything. Luckily they are harmless. Paola's school kids call them Wheelies. I remember them. And Chorlton.

Day 186 - Bright Spot

Sunflowers and lamps at Chez Gaz

Day 185 - Take Me Home

I love old American buses with their slanted windows and shiny chrome.

Day 184 - Ring My Bell

There are always options aplenty if you need to make a call from the street.

Day 183 - Rainmaker

An Aztec celebration by an Aztec statue.

Day 182 - Brick Wall

It's not always easy trying to post an original photo each day in a 365 project. Sometimes you just hit a brick wall. Still, it's an exercise in checking up on barrel distortion and vignetting. A pass on the count for the TZ5, but there is vignetting in the corners. A flash was used though, so it's more shadow than vignetting.

Day 181 - Gonzo

My newest fridge magnet. It's a turtle but looks more like Gonzo from the muppets.

Day 180 - Thinking Hard

There are lots of street dogs, but not so many street goats. I found a couple of them though.

Day 179 - Happy Dayz

A car in celebratory mood.

Day 178 - Geraniums

My latest potting plan. I've taken a half dead geranium that lay hidden in the small garden bed, and moved a few surviving cuttings to my hanging basket. Will they take? I promise an update. On Day 268. Yes I pulled that number from the air, but I'll try and remember...

Day 177 - Strange Brew

The church outside my home takes a well earned rest after several days of hard work over Easter. The sunset often bathes the city in a rather eerie orange glow.

Day 176 - The Hills Are Alive

Pretty much wherever you are in Mexico City you can see one or more of the huge mountains which ring the metropolis. It's always an impressive sight in the flesh, but never easy to capture in a photo. This is one of my (marginally) better efforts.

Day 175 - Tally Ho!

A statue, one of many, outside Belles Artes in the Centro Historico.

Day 174 - No Sting Here

How do you know if your RES, or terrapin, is a boy or a girl? You wait. Lots of 'experts' will offer judgement, but the reality is, short of chopping them open, you need to wait and see. A boy will have a huge tail and grow stupidly long claws, which will become evident after about a year. I have nine girls. My one boy, Itchy, kindly posed for this photo.

Day 173 - Clocks and Towers

A scene between the Zocalo and Belles Artes on a lesser trodden road.

Day 172 - Unconcerned

Electricity can be patchy sometimes in Mexico City. Which is why I brought back this Egyptian Candle holder from the UK in February. Bought in Egypt. Made in China. Of course.

Day 171 - Little Green Friends

Last year, at the end of the summer, I planted some seeds to see if I could grow some tomatoes. And it turns out I can grow tomotoes! Hopefully they will continue their fine growth!

Day 170 - Pothole of Death

This is the pothole that toppled me. It doesn't look terribly impressive on screen, but you'll have to trust me when I tell you it's a lot deeper and nastier than it looks!

Day 169 - Doh!

Homer Simpson enjoying himself in the weekly Ciclothon.

Day 168 - Old And New

I've watched the painfully slow construction of this new block of apartments from a fifth floor window for a couple of years. It was due for completion in October. But I love the little corner of tatty old buildings who will be neighbours to the posh folk one day.

Day 167 - Shimano

This week I've had major repairs and servicing done to my bike. The lights fitted, a new inner tube for the rear wheel, new aluminum pedals to replace the crappy broke plastic ones and new rear brakes. And a new set of rear cog things - after a year I finally have more than 1 usable rear wheel gear. So I can't blame the bike for the little accident I had a few hours after picking it up from the repair shop!

Day 166 - Cushion Your Fall

We've had four cushions, all the same design, hand made for our new sofas.

Day 165 - The Round Window

The rather fabulous domed glass ceiling at Palacio de Hierro in the Centro Coyoacan mall.
