A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Photo of the Month - May

Another month done, another vote to find the best or least worst photo amongst them. The poll is to your left...thank you! Come again...

Day 225 - Old And Older

Mexican architecture spans the entire spectrum from wonderful to bizarre, and every stage between. In the foreground one of the more common sights. A square block with old windows and peeling paint. Behind it, the World Trade Center, opened in 1972 (same year as its more famous cousin in New York) and the tallest building in Mexico from then till 2003, more than 30 years later, when Torre Mayor took the title.

Day 224 - Practise Makes Perfect

Eileen, a niece or something or other, at a birthday party, practising the female art of the seductive pout. About 15 years early...

Day 223 - Roof Dog

Meet Rover. That's what I call him anyway. He lives on a roof, on top of the dentist next to the church right beside my blog of apartments. He lives there with his buddy, also called Rover as I can't tell them apart. Roof dogs are not an uncommon sight in Mexico, and some live there their entire lives, never stepping foot on terra firma.

Day 222 - Selling Pumas

The football season in Mexico is drawing to a close, with Mexico City team Pumas facing off against Pachuca in a two legged final, the first of which will be played tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City. Merchandise sellers are, unsurprisngly, out in force on the streets of the city.

Day 221 - Longwalk Church

It's getting harder and harder to find unique things to photograph on a daily basis. Well, unique things that are vaguely interesting anyway. Today I decided to walk from Metro Coyoacan to Metro MA Quevedo, instead of taking the train. How far could 2 stops be? Quite far as it turned out, but it was a pleasant walk, and I did find something I hadn't photographed before....this very quaint little church. By the way, if you didn't already know, I also have a photography blog, which I thought I'd quickly promote...

Day 220 - Brick a Brack

A yard off of MA de Quevedo, selling lots of plain flower pots, and these trinkets on a wooden platform. A little bit bizarre...

Day 219 - Dos Pesos

A lady and her (one assumes) son selling sweets at the entrance to Metro Coyoacan.

Day 218 - Saxy Girl

A girl playing to the crowd along Alvaro Obregon on market day.

Day 217 - Ghost Murals

Tiled mosaic in Metro Chabacano celebrating Mexico's most famous artists.

Day 216 - Spring Rose

Technically, not a rose. But I was thinking rose, the colour, the wine. After all, spring is here and rose is the wine of the moment. Apparently. Regardless, this plant, along with my previous blogged tomatoes, has actually been a success. I'm not normally so green fingered.

Day 215 - Two One

A sports shop on Tlalpan looks to maximize sales before the European Cup Final next week. Two Manchester shirts and one Barcelona shirt...an omen of the scoreline perhaps?

Day 214 - Metal Mohican

Posters can be cool. Even when they are stuck three to a lamppost, every lampost on every stret in the hood.

Day 213 - Love That Contrast

Which do I love the most, the contrast between some artistic graffiti and crap graffiti, or just the fact I turned the contrast right up? I haven't decided.

Day 212 - Fall Through The Cracks

My first experiment with shooting through a magnifying glass in lieu of having a macro lens! The result wasn't bad at all...without the magnifying glass, I had to move the camera several inches back in order to focus and obvioulsy also lost the extra 3x the glass provided. I will post a comparison post on my photography blog
shortly.

Day 211 - Peepholes

A building in UNAM, the giant university city, painted top to toe in a glorious mural, with just two columns of windows to let some light in.

Day 210 - Paint Me A Picture

A scene from Alvaro Obregon, a very cool area in the centre of the city with weekend markets for art, bric-a-brac and general old stuff.

Day 209 - Breakthrough

At class this morning, we did phrasal verbs etc based on 'break'. Breakthrough being one of them, and by chance the name of a new plastic cap they are producing for a US customer. As proudly displayed...

Day 208 - Wind Me Up

A harmonipan player at Miguel Angel de Quevedo.

Day 207 - Taking It Easy

Bob on his rock, waiting in vain for some sun on a cloudy day.

Day 206 - Spiderman

Pinatas are available in all shapes, sizes and flavours of superhero...

Day 205 - Leche Fever

I have a bit of a milk addiction. Always have had. There are no words in Spanish that I can pronounce better than 'Dos leches, por favor.'

Day 204 - Dia De Las Madres

We went to Italiannis to celebrate Mothers Day. It's expensive. Nothing left to offer the balloon seller some trade, I'm afraid.

Day 203 - Ocean Drive

Usually I take the daily photo for this blog as I pass by somewhere. Today I passed this Mercedes sat in front of a dolphin mural, but I didn't have my camera with me. Later I went back, a 20 minute walk, just to get it on film. Erm....sensor. Whatever. A 60's Mercedes in front of a dolphin mural? How could I post a photo of anything else today and feel satisfied?!

Day 202 - Angus Supreme

Angus the turtle relaxes after a hard day's sunbathing.

Day 201 - Lady In Red

A colourful doll on display at the Barbie exhibition at the Franz Mayer museum.

Day 200 - Ripe For Picking

My tomatos are ripening nicely, even if they are a little bit small. They've come along way since I last photographed them a month ago

Day 199 - Two Old Heads

Stained glass looking good in a church near Taxquena.

Day 198 - When I Was

I am going to make a whole set of photos soon, artificially aged to look all a bit antique.

Day 197 - Love Unlimited

A statue in Zona Rosa, with a few filters applied.

Day 196 - A Hard Stare

A rather scary looking doll in an exhibition case at Matro Chabacano

Day 195 - In The Navy

Look at the bright blue skies! A week of swine flu and reduced traffic has seen the smog clear. This monument is outside my local park and celebrates something to do with the navy.
