A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Day 255 - The Juggler

The traffic lights turn red, the cars stop (sometimes) and the street entertainers go to work. Breathing fire, doing acrobatics or in this case juggling. Then, before green, they go from car to car to collect some change. I gave them 5 pesos for this shot.

Day 254 - Shining Example

For round abouts a dollar you can get your shoes shined till you can see your face in them. There are thousand of these little stalls all over the city. Find one who is awaiting his next customer, jump up, place your feet in the stirrups and read the daily tabloid that is thrust into your hands, while the chap goes to work with several bottles and tins of dubious looking liquids. I don't know what the stuff in them is, but they do the job nicely!

The Lemonade Award

A brief interruption to my 365 programming as I have received an award. The Lemonade Award, from Amy. I don't know anything about this award other than it's a 'Pass It Along' type award. I did try and find the origin but failed. Was it inspired by Steel Magnolias? I can't say for sure. The only thing I know is that there are hundreds of results on Google of Lemonade Award winners.

Still, an award is an award, and it does mean that at least one person likes my blog to some degree! So I shall accept it gracefully and pass it on to three more deserving causes. Emm in London for her....well, London inspired posting. And also to Jesus and Steve. I could link to a hundred excellent blogs, and I choose these three largely because...well, they came to mind first and I haven't seen them get any awards lately. :)

Day 253 - WTC Plane

The title of the photo is an unashamed experiment to see how many views it is possible to generate through the title. I have a photo of a girl playing a saxaphone entitled Saxy Girl which has proven very popular. So why not try other concepts. The title is not a lie though. There is a plane in the photograph. And also the World Trade Center. Albeit the Mexico City version.

Day 252 - Little King

There are two shrines to the Virgen de Guadalupe near my house. Which is nearest I don't know. But I could hot either of them with a stone from my front yard.

Day 251 - Keep It Clean

It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it. A street cleaner in a more industrial part of the city.

Day 250 - Hanging Out

You have to find somewhere to dry clothes.

Day 249 - Washing Windows

A kid, one of a small group who seemed to be aged from about 8 to 12, washing car windows.

Day 248 - Queue Up

Microbuses queue up at the Miguel Angel de Quevedo stop.

Day 247 - Comes With Music

It comes with a mighty high price tag in Mexico too. I would love a new Nokia 5800. If I were in the UK I would probably pick one up, for free, on a cheap GBP20 contract which would give me all the texts and talk time I'd need. In Mexico, you can't get it on contract yet. It costs GBP350 approx on Pay As You Go, and when it does hit contract it'll still cost more than GBP250 with a measly few minutes of talk time a month. Electronics are such a rip off in this country.  But....it is still being heavily advertised.

Day 246 - 21 KM

I ran the Dia Del Padre (Father's Day) half marathon today. And here is the medal to prove it.

Day 245 - Grease Lightning

A car that looks like it should have lots of potential. If it had a set of back wheels.

Day 244 - Serenade

Paola on her birthday outing to a fancy Italian restaurant in San Angel.

Day 243 - Mormons

I've been walking past this place for nearly four years without ever bothering to turn my head to see what it is. It's a church. A Mormon church! So that's why there are plagues of those very smartly dressed nutters always wandering around my 'hood!

Day 242 - Abandoned

This place has been abandoned for years. I think it used to be a car sales or washing place, but it would make a great home. Those huge windows, the rooftop terrace and that massive front yard. Imagine the size of the turtle pond I would have there for my tribe of green shelled amigos...

Day 241 - Wish Upon A Waterfall

A water feature in the grounds of one of the businesses I go to to give English classes. A bank, in fact. My turtles would love to live here, I'm sure.

Day 240 - Periodico

One of my favourite posters on the metro at the moment. Well, the eye part anyway.

Day 239 - Say Cheese

A street performer during todays Ciclothon. Sometimes I take a photo and know straightaway it's a good 'un. This is one of those. In my own opinion, of course....

Day 238 - Ya Basta!

Political posters on the walls of a metro station.

Day 237 - Paint Me

What happened here I don't know. A joke, over enthusiasm, or just a simple mind.

Day 236 - Gas

Health and safety is a voluntary practice in Mexico.

Day 235 - The Mile Long Bridge

There are so many multiple carriage way roads in Mexico that many of the pedestrian bridges involve a brisk 10 minute stroll to get to the other side. I battle this one two or three times a week at Taxquena.

Day 234 - Lavender Lies

Paola's favourite colour is lavender. So I bought her a purple rose. Purple isn't quite the same as lavender, but it's as close as I could get. To be honest, it looks better in black and white.

Day 233 - Headache

Last week I uploaded this dashing you ladies backside view. This week, for the sake of equality, I give you her front.

Day 232 - Boobies

I've always been fairly easily impressed, and equally easily amused.

Day 231 - Pizzas Plaza

There's lots of pizza options in Mexico City. Aside from the independents, there's Benedettis, Dominos, Italiannis, Pizza Hut and more. There's also Pizzas Plaza, with four restaurants in the south of the city. And they are the best.

Day 230 - Moonset

The moon sitting behind a building bathed in a sunset. Do you know why the moon looks so much bigger when nearer the horizon that when it is directly above you? No one does. It's an unexplained optical illusion, a mystery that even NASA has been unable to figure out.

Day 229 - Banamex

Banamex, one of the biggest banks in Mexico, owned by the US giant Citi Group, and my own personal choice when I opened a bank account.

Day 228 - What An Ass

The title says it all. Whether I'm referring to the statue or the poster, I'll leave to your imagination.

Day 227 - Say My Name

It's almost voting time in Mexico City, electing...well, I'm not sure. I'm guessing senators of congressmen. Or both. All I know is that there sure are an awful lot of posters up promoting a lot of dodgy looking people for positions of power!

Day 226 - Cafe Tacuba

Along with graffiti, bill posters are a plague upon every untended (and many tended) vertical space in Mexico City. Why put up one poster when you can paste 20, one next to and on top of another.
