A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Photo Of The Month - July

.
.

I think I've grabbed a few good shots this month. More than usual anyway. So instead of the usual six to choose from, there are eight. The drill is the same as ever. Pick your favourite, try and identify it from the descriptions in the poll on the lefthand side of the page, and vote. Gracias!

Day 286 - Beheaded

Every Wednesday and Friday for the last 3, nearly 4, years I have set off early from Taxquena every morning to a class in Cuatro Caminos (top stop at the end of the blue line) for a class starting at 7am. About two minutes walk out of the station is this structure which, when I first started going to this class, had three heads of famous revolutionary Mexicans on it. The fourth had already been nicked. One by one they have been stolen, and now there are none. The heads must have weighed a ton...who, how and why?!

Day 285 - Run To The Hills

From the restaurant on the 41st floor of Torre Latinoamericana.

Day 284 - Trucka Rosa

You're a truck driver (or just pretend for a moment), with that traditional macho attitude, ample bodyhair, sweaty pits, beer gut and gravel voice perfect for the CB. You're tough. You couldn't be any more manly if you tried. And then your boss gives you a bright pink truck to drive. Love it!

Day 283 - Childsplay

Can you guess what it is yet?

Day 282 - Selling, Selling, Sold

The sign went on the gate a few weeks ago. The contents came out a few days ago, and the residents have departed and become ex-residents. We await the new occupiers. I hope they aren't noisy/drug dealers/kidnappers/general idiots!

Day 281 - Number Four

Our last day in paradise. Number four was our room, with a little square patio that is just hidden from view.

Day 280 - For A Few Pesos Less

One of the big plus points of staying at tiny Playa Ventura, is that you don't get hassled by beach vendors every five minutes. This lady, selling buckets and spades, was one of two or three that strolled past in our four days there.

Day 279 - Afterglow

Pacific sunsets are always worth watching. We didn't see any extra spectacular ones this time, but this was still a nice one.

Day 278 - Top Of The World

Our second day, and we drove about three minutes down to a neighbouring beach with a big set of rocks to climb on, and photograph from.

Day 277 - The Prize

Day 1 at Playa Ventura and the start of our summer beach vacation. The view from our room was very nice indeed!

Day 276 - Chinatown Mexico Style

We had a long walk today, which included a short stroll through Mexico's rather small Chinatown.

Day 275 - 10 Storey Painting

I love the huge murals that are often painted on the sides of otherwise ordinary buildings in the city.

Day 274 - Los Bisquets

Los Bisquets Obregon are a famous dining chain in Mexico City. But avoid the restaurant in Taxquena. We went there today, and it really wasn't good. The bill sure wasn't as cheap as the food anyway.

Day 273 - Sanitizado

Swine Flu fever has died down to next to nothing in Mexico City. Which will probably explain why most of the stickers promising regular and complete bleaching of metro carriages have become worn, neglected and are peeling.

Day 272 - Gonna Eat Me Some Peaches

I've grown a few tomatoes this year, but the pride of our home produce came from the peach tree out the back. At least 20 big and juicy ones.

Day 271 - Nelly The Elephant

I went to the circus tonight. Expect a blog post, plethora of photos and a video to appear on my blog shortly...

Day 270 - Ricas Carnitas

Wherever you go in Mexico City, whenever you are going there, a taco stall sitting on the street will be ready to cater for your brand of hunger.

Day 269 - Flowers For A Virgin

Another recurring theme - a shrine. But they really are absolutely everywhere. This one sits in the local mercado where I buy fruit and veg for making dinner with. I'm brewing up a spicy curry tonight.

Day 268 - KLM

Testing the 10x zoom lens on my TZ5 on a KLM plane coming in to land in Mexico City. It is a bit grainy, but the detail isn't bad.

The Neno Award

I've been awarded another award - the Neno award. By Missus Emm, bless her. According to the rules I have to nominate a further five bloggers, but I'm just far too busy to do such a thing. This strain of the award will just have to die with me! But I gratefully receive it nonetheless!

Photobucket

Day 267 - Under The Microscope

I went to an art museum today (to be blogged about later) which had a series of microscopes to look through. I went one further and put my camera lens in the eye cup. This is the result.

Day 266 - Graffiti Graffiti

Another day, another mural. There is no easier way to produce a creative photo than let someone else be creative, then come along and photograph their work!

Day 265 - El Norteño

I've done quite a few photos of murals during my 365 project and that's because so many of them are just so cool. This one, on the front of an otherwise cheap looking restaurant, is just such an example.

Day 264 - Hello There Stranger

I've been doing my training runs in a nearby park cum mini zoo. It's really a very pleasant place to go. Green, peaceful, lots of trees for shade and a few animals to say hello to.

Day 263 - Bob On The Rocks

It's been a while since I snapped one of my turtles. Usually a turtle photo means I had no inspiration that day! But today I've posted a piccy of Bob, the leader of the gang, because...well, he's Bob! My fave turtle.

Day 262 - Puppi Spa

Just when you think you've seen everything, along comes a mobile puppy spa.

Day 261 - Suspect

If ever I get kidnapped and various body parts previously owned by myself start turning up with ransom demands, this guy is number one suspect! He asks me far too many iffy questions! Really he's probably a perfectly nice, non-kidnapping bloke! He runs a taco stall just down the road.

Day 260 - Angel On Wide

This is the icon of Mexico City. The angel did fall off it's column once, in the 50's during an earthquake.

Day 259 - Saturday San Angel

San Angel is a bohemian and pretty wealthy little area in the south of the city, and ideal for eating out. Most places will demand you part with a lot of money, but it is possible to eat reasonably.

Day 258 - Pozole

The quintessential Mexican meal. Apart from the taco. Pozole. A broth with lots of pork and other veggies in a spicy sauce. Washed down with a bottle of Victoria.

Day 257 - Hammer and Chisel

In Polanco, the rich part of the city, they can afford rare luxuries that exist no where else in the city. I am referring to the lush, properly mown lawn.

Day 256 - A Peso A Pound

A fruit and veg seller setting up from the back of a car parked in the street.

Photo Of The Month - June

This months Photo of the Month with the usual six contenders. The drill is as usual...pick your favourite and vote on the poll to your left!
