A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Day Thirteen

I posted Paola's pumpkin masterpiece the other day. Here's mine. Happy Hallowe'en. Feliz Dia de los Muertos.

Day Twelve

Another filter, this time through Camera 360 for Android. It's the Back to 1839 filter, which is good time to set these old building in the market town of Ringwood, Hampshire.

Day Eleven

It's almost time for Day of the Dead, and we've got all the paper decorations up and sugared skulls on display. And seeing as it's also Halloween and the two festivals seem to be merging, we carved some pumpkins too...

Day Ten

Day 10

Some people regard fancy phonecam filters with a general sense of contempt. Not me. They're fun. This filter app, Paper Camera, cost me just over a pound. I think it'd work better on photos of people, but there were none handy when I decided to snap. So here's the rear of a row of houses shot from my work car park. It'll do for today.

Day Nine

Day 9

I just fancied seeing what sort of a job my Samsung Galaxy S2 would do at giving a bit of depth of field in a macro shot. Not bad at all.

Day Eight

Day 8

Yesterdays photo was from the 8th floor. Today I give you a photo of the 8th floor. Just for some context.

Day Seven

The view from the top (8th) floor at work.

Day Six

Day 6

The buttons of doom. I always prefer pressing zero. That means home time. Button 8? The long way up to another long day.

Day Five

We might have left Mexico, but we brought bits of it with us. Our Day of the Dead decorations are up.

Day Four

Paola throws a bowl at Tower Park  at my big birthday bowling party.

Day Three

Day Three

Back in April, when I went to buy a scooter, this was the bike I intended to get. I ended up getting an S-Wing instead. It was bigger but more expensive. And today it went in for a service. Which is how I've come into possession of the PCX 125 pictured above. Just something to get me home and back again later to collect the S-Wing. Did I get the right bike, now I've had a chance to test them both?

The PCX is smaller, lighter and thus more responsive. Brakes are sharp too. And I like the Idle Cut Off as well. But it's not as stable. Nor is it as comfortable as it's big brother. Much less storage space. But most important of all, less protection against the elements. I froze half to death on my way back home. It's also small for me. The rear view mirrors are next to useless as they are too low down, and too close to me. They need to be mounted on the bodywork in front of the handlebars. But it's a fun bike. If I were looking for a city-get-about rather than a rural cruiser, then I'd probably go for it.

Day Two

The ' Occupy' protesters camped in a mini tent city outside St Pauls Cathedral.

Day One

The first photo of my 2008 365 project was taken atop a mountain, the Nevado de Toluca. I thought I'd keep the height theme for the first photo of this project. This snap is brought to you from the top of the Monument in London which was built in the 1600's to commemorate the Great Fire of London.
