A Photo A Day

The object of a 365 photo project is simple - to take a photo everyday for a whole year. It's a popular concept that has spawned groups on Flickr and elsewhere. It's fun. It's educational. It's a great record of a year of your life.

I failed with my first attempt at a 365 project back in the mid noughties. But I did succeed in 2008/9 when I managed to take a photo a day, every day, without fail from October 19th round to the following October 18th. All of those photos are available on this blog.

I'm currently doing it all over again, but will go one better this time. As 2012 has a leap year, this time I'll be snapping 366 photos. And unlike 2008, when I lived in Mexico, these photos will record a year of my life in the UK.

Another change this time round will be the camera I use. In 2008 I used a Panasonic TZ5 travel zoom. I still have it, although I sport a shiny Olympus PEN as my prime camera these days. But that won't shoot any of my photos in this project.

This time I will be using the camera on my cell phone. Which is a Samsung Galaxy S2. It has an 8mp camera, and whilst its ultimate image quality falls well short of a proper camera, it's still good enough for this project. This project is meant to be spontaneous, experimental and fun.

One thing that will be just like last year though - the Photo of the Month vote. Stay tuned...

Day Seventy Four

The car park at Ringwood. By the bus stop. Have I previously mentioned how some days I am devoid of both subject and inspiration...

Day Seventy Three

Meercats. Cute. Very cute. But why does every house in the UK have statues of them in the living room?

Day Seventy Two

Winter is upon us. We have gas central heating. Of course. But there's nothing better than sitting in front of a roaring open fire.

Day Seventy One

A moment of peace. At lunch. At work.

Day Seventy

Today was shopping day. The January Sales, which nowadays start well before January. At the British institution that is Marks and Spencer. I wasn't impressed. I much prefer to shop at Next. Have done so for the last 10 years. Will do so for as long as I live in the UK, I suspect. Which may not be that much longer, of course.

Day Sixty Nine

Ringwood Forest, just a few minutes from home. And the place where I'm getting a few practice runs in before the Somerley 10km race next week.

Day Sixty Eight

This is definitely one of those shots that's about capturing memories. Christmas morning, with almost all the family present and accounted for. I'm not sure that anyone reads this blog. I haven't had a comment since resuming posting duties for my second 365 project. Sixty eight photos in and zero comments so far. This is a project first and foremost for myself though, so no matter. But if you are reading, then a very merry Christmas to you and yours.

Day Sixty Seven

Day 67

Paola loves London. We both do. We'd both like to live there. If we had jobs that paid well, we would. But we don't, so we don't. Short trips have to suffice for now. Sometimes I'm really pleased with the results my telephone camera manages to produce. This is one of those occasions.

Day Sixty Six

Day 66

A view from the interior of a city cruise boat on the Thames. Which was an excellent trip. More about that soon on my personal blog. This is the 66th photo of the project. Only another 300 photos to go.

Day Sixty Five

Day 65

The view of Bournemouth Bay from the 8th floor of my office block.

Day Sixty Four

Day 64

Sometimes in a 365 project, you'll have days of no inspiration. No stand out subjects. Nada. So you shoot any old thing. Sometimes it turns out interesting. Sometimes not.

Day Sixty Three

Day 63

In memory of the very sweet Florecita. Born sometime in early 2008, died sometime in September 2011.

Day Sixty Two

Day 62

The Christmas lights are up in Bournemouth. But the recession is showing. They seem more muted that in years gone by.

Photo of the Month 2

The second of the twelve months is done and dusted. Thirty more photos added to the collection. And in keeping with my 365 projects, I've put forward six candidates for the vote - which was the best of Month Two? Click here to go to the post on my blog where you'll be able to cast your ballot.

Day Sixty One

Morning has broken. Or evening is sung. The view first thing in morn and last thing in the evening, before things blacken.

Day Sixty

Cell phone cameras really struggle at night. That's the price of having such a small sensor. This shot has obvious flaws, which become more obvious the closer you look. But viewed on the monitor at a normal size, it really isn't too bad. The carousel is in Bournemouth Square for the Christmas season.

Day Fifty Nine

Day 59

I can get some macro action/depth of field out of the Sammy Galaxy S2. I'd like a bit more. But it is just a cellphone after all...

Day Fifty Eight

Day 58

This is Ted. He's a German Shepherd. Not any old GSD, mind. He's a multi award winning former police dog, now enjoying his retirement. Many people will tell you what the best breed of dog is. If the answer they provide is anything than GSD, they're telling porkies :)

Day Fifty Seven

Day 57

Lacking inspiration? Shoot any old scene, tilt it at an angle, convert it to black and white. It works.

Day Fifty Six

Day 56

There were some storms last night. Near hurricane force winds. The damage is clear for all to see. We will rebuild.

Day Fifty Five

Day 55

Only crazy people do this sort of a job. I both admire their head for heights and ridicule their senseless stupidity.

Day Fifty Four

The Christmas tree is up and the lights are on. We don't like Christmas in England. We prefer Christmas in Mexico. We don't care if the traditional images of Christmas feature snow, bleak landscapes and icicles. We'll give them a miss in exchange for a nice sunny afternoon any day of the week.

Day Fifty Three

No getting away from it. While there are towns and cities nearby, I live in a pretty rural 'hood. Meet the neighbours. Or should that be moobours...

Day Fifty Two

Once upon a time, a lifetime ago, I was a retail manager. Gas stations were my forte. I spent very nearly ten years with Texaco, or Star Service Stations to be exact. It had its pros and cons. Paying my staff National Minimum Wage meant that I had to sometimes scrape the dregs out of the employment bucket. And suffer them. But I was earning about 50% more, ten years ago, that I am today. This photo is of the branch I managed up till May 2005. When I left for Mexico. It was a good store. It's not a Texaco any more though. They sold up their UK owned sites in the UK shortly after I left.

Day Fifty One

Day 50

One of the joys of having a motorbike is that I get to use the company car park. Which is normally the preserve of old-timers and bigwigs. Not newbies.

Day Fifty

Day 50

My bike, a Honda S-Wing, hasn't been getting enough of a look in on my 365. Time to change that. It has a nice shiny dash with lots of lights and dials. Why an automatic, twist and go scooter would need a rev counter beats me though...

Day Forty Nine

Mexico is in my heart. And also a corner of my room. A newly purchased Poinsettia betwixt a pair of framed photos I bought in DF. Both photos are from the early 1900's, one of Bellas Artes under construction and one of the Monument of the Revolution.

Day Forty Eight

The skies are blue. Afternoon sun reflects off tall buildings. But looks can be deceptive. It's suddenly turned bitterly cold. After dark termperatures have been distinctive sub zero.

Day Forty Seven

As close as you'll get to me producing a self portrait. We went for a morning walk across Avon Heath today, which is covered with fir and pine trees. You can, on specified days and subject to bookings, go cut yourself down a Christmas tree. Someone has been around covering trees here and there with baubles. Which is both a little bizarre and yet at the same time, most excellent. Most excellent indeed...

Day Forty Six

The River Avon, cutting its way through Ringwood. It's gotten cold lately.

Day Forty Five

Mike and Emilie, fellow I4R'ers at the annual Christmas bash at the Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth.

Day Forty Four

Paper Camera at work again, on the tall uni building next door to my office.
